About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Vitória is the compact, sun-soaked capital of Espírito Santo, tucked along Brazil’s southeast coast. Known as "Little Rio de Janeiro," the city blends a historic port character with island scenery, encircled by the Bay of Vitória and dotted with granite outcrops, mangroves, and beaches. Most neighborhoods are framed by parks and green hills, and cultural events add an easygoing energy throughout the year.

The city makes a practical base for exploring nearby destinations — Vila Velha, Guarapari, Domingos Martins, and Serra are all under two hours away by car or bus. Vitória also sits along the coastal route between Rio de Janeiro and southern Bahia, making it a natural stopover for travelers heading to beach towns like Prado, Caravelas, or Porto Seguro.

Things to See

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Old town — five centuries of history show in the weathered colonial architecture, though some areas have a worn, salty-air patina.
  • Bay of Vitória — the island-dotted bay surrounds the city with granite formations, mangroves, and views best appreciated from the water or viewpoints like Maciço da Fonte Grande.

  • August to mid-September — the driest and most comfortable stretch, with mild temperatures around 21.7°C, very low rainfall, and plenty of sunshine.
  • Mid-year dry season — generally the best window for outdoor sightseeing, with less humidity and fewer rainy days.
  • Avoid October to January if possible — these months bring the heaviest rainfall, which can disrupt beach days and outdoor plans.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Arriving by plane — Eurico de Aguiar Salles Airport is about 10 minutes by taxi from most hotels; bus line 212 connects the airport to the beach, port, and bus station in under an hour.
  • Long-distance buses — overnight buses from Rio de Janeiro (about 8 hours) and São Paulo (about 14 hours) are common and less tiring than daytime travel.
  • Getting around locally — you’ll need a Cartão GV transit card for city buses; without a CPF, the easiest place to get one is at Terminal Jardim América.
  • Driving in — BR-101 runs the coast north–south, while BR-262 heads inland to Belo Horizonte; local highway 60 follows the shore south to Guarapari.
  • Stay alert after dark — prefer taxis over walking at night on empty streets, and be especially cautious around Curva da Jurema and downtown.
