About this place

Last updated Jun 13, 2026

Visakhapatnam, affectionately called Vizag, is a vibrant coastal city on India’s eastern shore that blends industrial strength with natural beauty. Nicknamed the Jewel of the East Coast and the City of Destiny, it draws visitors with unspoilt sandy beaches, laterite hillocks, and a growing medical tourism scene. Its multicultural fabric includes Marwari, Odia, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, and Malayali communities, reflecting decades of migration tied to major employers like Vizag Steel Plant and Hindustan Shipyard.

The city’s history stretches back centuries, with local lore linking its name to a 4th-century temple now submerged beneath Lawson’s Bay. Over time it passed through the hands of Jeypore, Golconda, the Nizams of Hyderabad, and eventually British rule, when it was known as Vizagapatnam and Waltair. Today, Vizag serves as a gateway to nearby hill getaways like Araku Valley and a string of serene beaches that remain refreshingly uncrowded compared to India’s better-known coastal destinations.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 13, 2026
  • Book long-distance train tickets as far in advance as possible; major connections fill up weeks ahead, especially in the winter travel window.
  • Consider Volvo Garuda buses from Chennai, Bangalore, Vijayawada, or Hyderabad for a comfortable alternative to trains.
  • Yarada Beach charges a small entry fee (around ₹30) and has no regular public transport, so plan on hiring a taxi or auto-rickshaw for the trip.
  • Familiarise yourself with the two main city bus types: the frequent but crowded orange/red City Ordinary buses and the quicker, less crowded blue-and-white Metro Express buses.
  • Pick up an RTC-Pass if you plan to use APSRTC buses frequently within the city; it can be renewed monthly and offers unlimited travel on city routes.
  • Look for Andhra Pradesh State-owned Lepakshi handicraft stores for quality local souvenirs like sandalwood carvings and stone art.
