About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is a city where Baroque grandeur and a turbulent past meet a lively, forward-looking present. Its UNESCO-listed Old Town is one of the largest and best-preserved in Europe, a maze of cobblestone lanes, hidden courtyards, and ornate churches that unfold along the main artery of Pilies gatve. Standing on the River Neris in the country’s southeastern Dzūkija region, the city of roughly 629,000 people offers excellent tourist facilities across all budgets.

Beyond the postcard-perfect historic core, Vilnius reveals layers of history and a creative spirit. The bohemian district of Užupis, a self-declared artists’ republic with its own constitution, captures the city’s independent streak. Green spaces like the Verkiai Regional Park offer a quick escape into nature, while a growing food and craft beer scene gives visitors plenty to explore after a day of sightseeing.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Use contactless for transit — A single 60-minute bus ticket costs €1.25. For multiple trips, load credit or a 24/72-hour ticket onto a JUDU smart card from a Narvesen kiosk or grocery store.
  • Ditch the car in the center — Old Town streets are pedestrianized and parking is both scarce and time-limited. Explore on foot and by bus, and only rent a car for trips out of the city.
  • Save with multi-ride apps — The Trafi app is available in English and allows you to buy 30-minute tickets for €1.00 or discounted packs of 10, making it cheaper than a contactless single ride.
  • Book balloon flights in advance — Hot air ballooning over the city is a spectacular experience but relies on weather. Book early in your stay to allow flexibility for rescheduling.
  • Stay aware after dark — While generally safe, it's wise to use standard precautions and avoid lingering alone around the central railway and bus station areas at night.
