About this place
Vijayapura, still widely known as Bijapur, is a city in northwestern Karnataka with a remarkable medieval past. For nearly two centuries it served as the capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty, whose sultans turned the citadel into a showcase of palaces, tombs, and mosques.
Today the skyline is dominated by the Gol Gumbaz, whose vast dome is the second-largest in the world. The walled old city has a cluster of well-preserved monuments that reward history and architecture lovers, though tourist infrastructure remains limited compared with larger Indian cities.

Things to See
- Gol Gumbaz — the city's iconic monument, famed for its whisper gallery and the second-largest dome on the planet.
- Ibrahim Roza — an elegantly proportioned tomb-and-mosque complex often called the Taj Mahal of the Deccan.
- Jami Masjid — a spacious Adil Shahi-era congregational mosque with graceful arches and a serene courtyard.
- Citadel gates and bastions — the remains of the fortified walls, massive gateways, and the watchtower of Upli Buruj offer a glimpse of Bijapur's military past.
- Lesser-known monuments — Bara Kaman, Jod Gumbaz, Taj Bawdi, and Malik-e-Maidan (the enormous medieval cannon) are easily added to a half-day circuit.

Best Time to Visit
- October to mid-March — the most pleasant season, with average temperatures around 25.2°C and very little rain.
- December–January — the coolest months, with overnight lows near 12.9°C; ideal for full days of exploring.
- Avoid April–June — pre-monsoon summer heat is intense and drains energy for outdoor monument-hopping.

Planning Tips
- Base yourself near MG Square — the main chowk puts shops, auto-rickshaws, and several sights within easy reach.
- Negotiate transport up front — agree on a price before boarding an auto-rickshaw, or hire a vehicle for a half-day circuit of the eight major sites.
- Carry cash — card acceptance is patchy, so keep enough rupees for entrance fees, rides, and small eateries.
- Allow a full day — the classic circuit of eight monuments fills a day comfortably; add an extra half-day for lesser-known spots east or west of the citadel.
