About this place

Victoria de Durango is the capital of the state of Durango in Northern Mexico and a city that blends colonial grandeur with a unique cinematic heritage. Often described as very friendly, its Historic Center holds the largest collection of catalogued historic buildings in northern Mexico and forms part of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Founded in 1563 as a silver-mining settlement, the city later became famous as a filming location for westerns, a legacy that still colors its personality today. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 6,200 feet on the Valley of Guadiana plain, Durango also serves as a gateway to natural escapes in the nearby Sierra Madre Occidental.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Navigate with colors — City buses use a color code indicating their direction; learning the system (e.g., blue and yellow for south) helps you get around affordably.
  • Try local flavors — Look for regional specialties like caldillo Duranguense (a meat and poblano stew), asado rojo, and gorditas, and keep an eye out for the legendary — if possibly folkloric — scorpion-topped dishes.
  • Base yourself in or near the center — Staying downtown places the largest concentration of historic sights, restaurants, and cultural events within walking distance.
  • Use ride-hailing apps — Uber and Didi are readily available and can simplify trips to the bus station or film-set locations on the city's edge.
