About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Verona is a historic city in north-eastern Italy that feels more relaxed than its famous neighbour Venice. Known worldwide as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, its UNESCO-listed centre rewards visitors with Roman ruins, medieval churches, and lively piazzas. Much of the charm comes from simply strolling the old streets, especially once day-trippers have gone.

Beyond the headline sights, the city opens onto a region of remarkable variety. Day trips lead to Lake Garda, the vineyards of Valpolicella, and art-rich cities such as Mantova and Vicenza — all easily reached by train or bus.

Things to Do

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Explore the Carega district — near the Duomo and Garibaldi Bridge, this neighbourhood hides traditional wine bars and snug restaurants away from the busiest streets.
  • Join a guided tour or wine trip — local guides lead city sightseeing walks or excursions into the Soave and Valpolicella wine country.
  • Catch a football match — Hellas Verona play at Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi, a 39,000-capacity ground about 2 km west of the centre.
  • Visit the Christmas markets — during the winter holiday season, stalls and festive lights bring a different kind of energy to the historic core.

  • Arena di Verona — the remarkably preserved Roman amphitheatre at the heart of Piazza Bra; it still hosts world-class opera performances, especially in summer.
  • Castelvecchio — a 14th-century fortress spanning the Adige River, now housing an excellent art museum and offering rooftop views of the medieval centre.
  • Basilica of San Zeno — a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture, famous for its bronze doors, frescoes, and serene cloister.
  • Piazza delle Erbe — the city’s historic market square, lined with frescoed buildings, bars, and the ornate Palazzo Maffei; a fine spot for morning coffee or an evening aperitivo.
  • Scaligeri legacy — look for the della Scala family’s ladder emblem on tombs and buildings while touring churches like Sant’Anastasia and the cathedral.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Book early for opera season — if visiting between July and August, reserve accommodation months ahead; alternative bases like Vicenza or Padua can serve as fallbacks.
  • Consider the Verona Card — it packages entry to multiple attractions and can save time at popular sights.
  • Rely on buses for day trips — bus 185 and others run from the main train station to Lake Garda; grab a timetable before heading out.
  • Eat like a local — beyond tourist menus, sample regional dishes such as pastisada de caval, casoncelli, or bollito misto with mostarda.
