About this place

Last updated Jul 31, 2026

Veria sits on the slopes of Mount Vermio in Central Macedonia, overlooking the Aliakmonas River plain. Often called "Little Jerusalem" for its dozens of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, the town offers a blend of ancient history and traditional neighborhood charm. The nearby archaeological site of Vergina, just 12 km from the center, is the area's premier attraction.

The historic districts of Kyriotissa and Barbouta reward aimless wandering. Kyriotissa, the old Christian quarter, hides stone churches along narrow cobbled lanes, while Barbouta — the former Jewish quarter — features Ottoman-style houses with wooden balconies cantilevered over the Tripotamos River. This same neighborhood holds the synagogue where Paul the Apostle is said to have preached in the 1st century AD.
