Velikiy Novgorod, often called Novgorod the Great, is one of Russia’s oldest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, it forms part of the Silver Ring of cultural and historical centers in northwestern Russia. For centuries it was a vital hub of trade and governance, once serving as the capital of the Novgorod Republic.

Today the city of about 230,000 people makes an easy side trip from Saint Petersburg. Its compact, walkable center rewards travelers with layers of medieval history, while modern buses and trolleybuses connect every district.

Planning Tips

  • Arrange train tickets early — Overnight services from Moscow and seated trains from Saint Petersburg can fill up; booking ahead secures better seating or sleeper options.
  • Use Saint Petersburg as your air gateway — Since Novgorod’s airport remains closed, factor in a roughly 3-hour rail transfer from Pulkovo Airport.
