About this place

Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Van sits on the eastern shore of Lake Van, Turkey’s largest lake, at 1640 meters above sea level. Its dramatic setting beneath a striking rock castle and ring of high mountains gives the area a harsh continental climate. The modern city of about 525,000 people lies 5 km east of the original waterfront site, which was devastated during World War I and later by earthquakes.

The region was once the heart of the Urartu kingdom and later an important Armenian center. Today, Van offers travelers a mix of ancient history, lakeside scenery, and a gateway location near the Iranian border. Visitors come to explore fortress ruins, island churches, volcanic landscapes, and the unique culture of eastern Turkey.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Explore Tuşpa — the 9th-century Urartian capital site between the castle and lake, now a parkland with a couple of ruined mosques and submerged ruins offshore.
  • Boat to Akdamar Island — visit the 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross, one of the region’s most iconic sights, set on a small island in Lake Van.
  • Chase waterfalls and gorges — Muradiye Waterfalls plunge 20 meters down a basalt cliff, freezing into an ice curtain in harsh winters. Nearby Devil's Bridge spans a dramatic gorge.
  • See the Vanadokya hoodoos — eroded volcanic formations near Yavuzlar village, resembling Cappadocia far to the west, with soft rock sculpted into fairy chimneys.

  • Lake Van Monster statue — a cheerful sculpture installed in 2025 celebrating the local legend of a beast said to inhabit the hypersaline lake.
  • Varagavank Monastery — a 10th-century Armenian monastic ruin on the slopes of Mount Erek, tumbledown but atmospheric with sweeping lake views.

  • Late May to mid-October — the longest comfortable window, with warm days averaging 20°C, very low rainfall, and abundant sunshine.
  • June and September — peak warmth without the highest summer extremes, ideal for exploring ruins and taking boat trips on the lake.
  • Spring birdwatching (April–May) — migrating waterbirds pass through Lake Erçek, 30 km east of the city, a key stopover on migration routes.
  • Avoid mid-winter (Dec–Feb) — heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and icy roads make sightseeing difficult and can close mountain passes.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 27, 2026
  • Fly if you can — Van’s airport has daily flights from Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir; it’s only 5 km from the city center, a 15-minute dolmuş ride.
  • Use the train from Iran — a revived rail link connects Tehran and Van, arriving at the ferry pier for onward travel across the lake.
  • Carry cash — dolmuş rides around town cost 20 TL (2025) and drivers seldom accept bank cards; have small bills ready.
  • Book long-distance buses carefully — some companies on the Mardin route may cancel last minute; changing at Diyarbakır is often more reliable.
