About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Utrecht is a vibrant, historic Dutch city with a youthful energy thanks to its large student population. Founded as a Roman fortification on the Rhine nearly two millennia ago, it grew into a major cultural and religious center — the city's medieval heart is still crowned by the towering Dom church. Today, around 360,000 people call the city home, making it the fourth-largest in the Netherlands.

Visitors are drawn to the unique, café-lined Oudegracht canal, whose lower-level wharf cellars are a signature of the city. Compact and walkable, Utrecht rewards exploration by foot or bicycle, and its central location makes it an ideal base for day trips around the country.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Get an OV-chipkaart for transit — this rechargeable card is needed for convenient use of buses, trams, and trains; day passes for local U-OV buses and trams offer unlimited travel.
  • Park outside the center — use one of the four P+R lots for a flat €5 daily rate including tram or bus fare for up to five people into the heart of the city.
  • Rent a bike with a good lock — OV-Fiets rentals at stations are economical with a personal OV-chipkaart subscription, but always park in the free guarded facilities.
  • Book accommodations early for festivals — events like the Festival Oude Muziek and student calendar peaks fill rooms quickly, so plan ahead if visiting at the end of summer.
  • Embrace the snackbar culture — try Dutch treats like thick-cut fries or a kroket from local counters for a quick, affordable bite.
