About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Ust-Kamenogorsk (also known as Oskemen) is the capital of the Eastern Kazakhstan Province, a city of about 350,000 people set at the meeting point of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers. Founded in 1720, it serves as a gateway to the Altai Mountains and offers a distinctly northeastern Kazakh character shaped by industry, riverside life, and a long history.

The city center is compact and easy to explore, with a vintage tram system and an inviting riverside promenade anchoring its social life. Travelers can expect an authentic, unhurried pace—whether watching an ice hockey game at the local arena or strolling through the river confluence park on a warm evening.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Getting in by air — Air Astana and SCAT run multiple weekly flights from Almaty; SCAT also serves nearby regional points once a week.
  • Long-distance trains — Daily trains connect from Almaty and Astana; sleeper compartments (around 13,000–20,000 tenge) are a practical choice for the 19–24 hour ride.
  • City transport — A vintage tram system and city buses make getting around straightforward and cheap.
  • Mobile connectivity — As of late 2024, all Kazakh carriers provide 4G in the city, though coverage can be patchy on approach highways.
  • Health awareness — Due to documented industrial pollution and a past radioactive incident, exercise caution about direct contact with river water.
