About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Uruapan, officially Uruapan del Progreso, lies in the heart of Michoacán’s lush avocado-growing region and is the state’s second-largest city. Founded in 1533, it offers travelers a mix of colonial-era charm and living indigenous tradition. The historic center features Plateresque and Moorish architectural details, and six old neighborhoods—San Miguel, San Pedro, San Francisco, Santa Maria Magdalena, San Juan Bautista, and Santo Santiago—each center around a colonial chapel.

The city has a relaxed, authentic pace. It serves as an excellent base for exploring Purepecha cultural sites and a jumping-off point for the Ruta Don Vasco. Visitors can expect a genuine local experience centered on handcrafts, traditional festivals, and a distinctive regional cuisine.
