Ujjain, known in Sanskrit as Ujjayinī, is one of India’s oldest and most revered cities, perched on the eastern bank of the Shipra River in the heart of Madhya Pradesh. Steeped in legend—said to have been the capital of king Vikramaditya and his famed navaratnas court—it holds a unique place in both Hindu spirituality and the history of astronomy.

Today, the city is best known as a major pilgrimage center, home to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Every twelve years, it draws hundreds of millions of devotees for the Kumbh Mela, making it a vibrant focal point of faith and tradition in central India.
