About this place
Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan, is a sprawling city of over a million people straddling the geographical boundary between Europe and Asia. Set on a high slope above the Belaya River, the city stretches for more than 50 km from north to south but is less than 5 km wide, shaped by the river and the steep terrain along its banks. Its history reaches back to a 16th-century fortress ordered by Ivan the Terrible, and today it carries an intriguing blend of Bashkir and Russian cultural influences, visible in everything from its wooden houses to its modern national-style architecture.
Walking through the historical center reveals layers of the past: ornate wooden houses, pre-revolutionary stone buildings, and Soviet-era constructions sit alongside glass-and-concrete developments. The Old City, Trunilovskaya Sloboda, and the Nizhny Novgorod Sloboda reward aimless strolls with views over the river and details like old madrassas and elaborate fences. Further north, the Chernikovka district feels like a separate city, anchored by the striking Lyalya-Tyulpan Mosque and its own Stalinist-era ensemble.

Planning Tips
- Marshrutkas and buses cover the whole city and run frequently; pay in cash right before getting off, and have smaller notes ready as drivers can make change for 50- or 100-ruble notes.
