About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

Ürümqi is the capital of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, in the Tian Shan mountains. It's famous for being the most inland major city in the world, over 2,300 km from any ocean. The name comes from Mongolian, meaning "great pasture." The city is home to a mix of ethnic groups, including a large Han Chinese population and a significant Uyghur community, as well as Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Mongols, and Hui Muslims.

Despite some guidebooks suggesting otherwise, Ürümqi has a lot to offer and provides a great introduction to Xinjiang. The city's sprawling center is separated into different districts, with the Grand Bazaar area serving as the heart of the Uyghur community. The surrounding Nan Shan mountains offer a picturesque escape with Kazakh yurts and alpine scenery.

Getting around can be done by metro, bus (including a Bus Rapid Transit system), and taxi. All signs and metro announcements are trilingual in Chinese, Uyghur, and English. While Mandarin is widely spoken, English is not common, so having your destination written in Chinese is helpful.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Arrange accommodation before arrival. Due to local regulations, many hotels, especially budget options, do not accept foreign guests. Reserve a foreigner-friendly hotel in advance.
  • Carry your passport at all times. You are required to do so in China, and police may ask to see it, especially as a visible foreigner.
  • Bring a written address in Chinese. Since English is not widely spoken, having your destination written in Chinese is helpful for taxi drivers and directions.
  • Watch out for tourist menus. At restaurants near the Grand Market, you may be given a menu with inflated prices (over ¥1,000 per dish). Stick to nearby streets for more reasonably priced food.
  • Be cautious with local food if you have a weak stomach. Uyghur and Hui food can be very oily, and sanitary conditions may vary. Stick to naan and kebabs if you are concerned.
  • For visa needs, check in advance. Only Kazakhstan currently has a visa office in Ürümqi. For other Central Asian countries, you may need to apply elsewhere.
