About this place

Last updated Aug 22, 2026

Udupi is best known across India for its namesake vegetarian cuisine, but the town itself offers a compelling blend of spirituality, coastal beauty, and cultural tradition. It is a major pilgrimage centre for the Maadhva sect of Hinduism, with the Krishna temple complex at its heart, while the suburb of Manipal brings a youthful, international energy as a prominent educational and medical hub.

Located along the Arabian Sea coast, Udupi pairs temple-town charm with easy access to sandy beaches and the lush foothills of the Western Ghats. The rhythm here is unhurried — temple-hopping, beach walks, and a rich local food scene define a visit more than nightlife or big-ticket attractions.

Things to Do

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Beach hopping — Udupi’s coastline is dotted with sandy beaches such as Malpe. They are more relaxed than Goa’s party strips, making them ideal for long walks, sunset watching, and casual swims.
  • Surfing near Mulki — Head south toward Mulki for surf retreats that blend wave-riding with spiritual elements. Options exist for beginners and experienced surfers alike.
  • Trekking toward the Ghats — Turn east toward Karkala and Agumbe for excellent trekking routes in the Western Ghat foothills. Rainy season hikes reward with dramatic greenery and waterfalls.
  • Cultural performances — Seek out a Yakshagana dance-drama, a Bhoota Kola, or a Naga Mandala ritual if you can. These traditional events are fascinating but usually advertised only in local Kannada papers.
  • Culinary exploration — Try distinct local specialties like matti gulla eggplant, hayagreeva maddi sweet, and golibaje fritters beyond the famous Udupi vegetarian thali.

Things to See

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Sri Krishna temple complex — The spiritual centre of Udupi, this historic complex includes the main Krishna temple, the Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara temples, and eight surrounding monasteries along the lively Ratha Beedi (chariot street).
  • Ratha Beedi and the eight mutts — The chariot street doubles as the religious heart and a shopping lane. The eight Maadhva monasteries bordering it play a central role during the festive Paryaya procession.
  • Malpe Beach — A popular coastal spot just outside town with a fish-fry stall near the entrance. The beach is a simple but pleasant escape for sand, sea, and local snacks.
  • Manipal — This internationally minded educational suburb brings a mix of global cuisines, cafes, and a livelier atmosphere than Udupi proper, making it a useful contrast for visitors.

  • October to March (cool and dry) — The most pleasant weather, with lower humidity and daytime temperatures that are comfortable for sightseeing, temple visits, and beach time.
  • Late November to early April (optimal window) — This period benefits from abundant sunshine, very light rains, and consistent conditions ideal for outdoor activities and regional exploration.
  • April–May (hot but fruitful) — Expect higher temperatures, but this is the season for ripe mangoes and pre-monsoon cultural energy. Best for food-focused visits if you can handle the heat.
  • June–September (monsoon magic) — Heavy rains transform the landscape into vivid green. Suitable for travelers who enjoy rain-soaked environments, trekking the lush Ghats, and don’t mind spending some time indoors.

Planning Tips

Last updated Aug 22, 2026
  • Getting in — The closest airport is Mangalore International, about 59 km away with pre-paid taxis available. Udupi is also on the Konkan Railway route and National Highway NH-66, with direct buses to major coastal cities.
  • Getting around — Private city buses, auto-rickshaws, and hired cabs are the main options. Auto fares are metered in theory, but expect to negotiate; use the official rates as a guideline.
  • What to buy — Around Ratha Beedi, pick up snacks and juice extracts, spice powders like sambar and saaru powder, coconut oil, Ayurvedic medicines, wood handicrafts, and local sweets such as wheat and banana halwa.
  • Dress for temples — Temples are conservative environments. Dress modestly and be prepared to remove footwear. The Krishna temple offers free meals; try to experience the Satvik lunch if timing permits.
  • Cash and connectivity — While Udupi has ATMs and digital payments in many places, smaller shops and auto drivers often prefer cash, so carry some with you, especially near the temple area and beaches.
