About this place

Last updated Jul 26, 2026

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, set amid gently rolling rice paddies and steep river gorges about 200 meters above sea level. Far from the beach-party scene of the south, the town and its surrounding fourteen villages are famous as a hub for art, dance, and traditional crafts. Its central streets hum with galleries, cafes, and workshops, while just a short walk away, terraced fields and quiet village life continue much as they have for generations.

The area’s spiritual roots reach back more than a thousand years, and its modern identity as an arts center began in the 1930s when foreign artists were welcomed by the royal family. Today Ubud balances a world-class international visitor scene with its enduring role as Bali’s creative and spiritual lodestar.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 26, 2026
  • Allow at least a week — The area is dense with attractions, historical sites, and performances; a short stay barely scratches the surface.
  • Hire a knowledgeable guide — For major temples like Goa Gajah, Gunung Kawi, and Tirta Empul, a guide unveils the spiritual and cultural stories behind the stones.
  • Get around by motorbike — Rental scooters are cheap and practical for exploring outlying villages and viewpoints, though the hilly terrain and traffic demand confident riding.
  • Mind the monkeys — In the Monkey Forest, secure glasses, earrings, and loose items; the macaques are lightning-fast thieves.
  • Pack mosquito repellent — Dengue fever outbreaks occur in Bali, and protection is essential.
