About this place
Tver is a historic city with deep roots as a former rival to Moscow, sitting on the Volga River between Russia’s two largest cities. While its medieval core is largely lost, the downtown rewards visitors with attractive neoclassical architecture dating from the era of Catherine the Great.
The city has long served as a vital transit point — a role it played when one of its merchants, Afanasiy Nikitin, became one of the first Europeans to document a journey to India. Today it remains a convenient and culturally interesting stop on the route between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Things to Do
- Stroll Tryokhsvyatskaya Street — Tver’s pedestrian-friendly answer to Moscow’s Arbat. Lined with cafés, art spaces, and bars, it is the social heart of the city center.
- Walk the Volga embankment — a popular riverside promenade ideal for a leisurely outing, with views of the waterway that has defined the city’s history.
- Explore the city’s surviving churches and palaces — many architectural remnants have been converted into museums, offering a window into Tver’s past.
- Day-trip by suburban train — the busy commuter line connects to lush countryside spots favored by locals for summer dachas, lakeside camping, and picnics.

Planning Tips
- Take the Sapsan for speed — the fastest and most comfortable option from Moscow (1 hour) or St. Petersburg (2 hours).
- Watch out on suburban trains — save your ticket for exit gates at Tver station; Lastochka express trains are cleaner and twice as fast as older electrichki.
- Plan around rush hour — morning trains to Moscow and evening trains toward Tver are packed with commuters, especially on weekdays.
- Find the bus station near the train hub — it’s a 200 m walk southeast past the Karusel shopping mall; look for the large building marked "АВТОВОКЗАЛ".
