About this place
Turpan sits in the Turpan Depression, the lowest point in China at 154 meters below sea level. This Silk Road city is known for extreme summer heat, a landscape shaped by ancient irrigation, and a cultural identity rooted in its Uyghur majority.
The surrounding desert, including Flaming Mountain, is famously hot and dry. Locals have long countered the climate with karez — an ingenious system of wells linked by underground channels. The area is also celebrated for its grapes, which appear fresh, dried as raisins, or increasingly in local wines.
