About this place
Turkestan is one of Kazakhstan's most historically layered cities, rising from the Kazakh Desert with over 1,600 years of settlement. It is best known as the final home of the revered Sufi sheikh Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, whose 14th‑century Timurid mausoleum remains the city's spiritual and architectural centerpiece.
The city later served as the capital of the Kazakh Khanate, and many Kazakh khans and statesmen are buried here. Today it balances deep‑rooted Muslim traditions — long regarded as "the Second Mecca of the East" by Central Asian Muslims — with a growing tourist infrastructure of hotels, bazaars, and modern transport links. Though compact, Turkestan rewards visitors who come for history, architecture, and a slower pace away from Kazakhstan's bigger hubs.

Things to Do
- Stroll the Yasawi Mausoleum grounds — a spacious park surrounds the mausoleum, historical buildings, and a large modern mosque. It's the heart of the city and ideal for a relaxed walk among Timurid-era monuments.
- Catch a football match at Turkistan Arena — FC Turan plays in the First Division. The 7,000‑seat stadium is just east of the center, with matches scheduled during the March–November season.
- Experience the main bazaar — the road between the mausoleum and Merey bus station holds a genuine local market. It's not touristy; you'll find fresh produce, hot samsa, electronics, and excellent local kurt (dried sour‑cream balls, similar to parmesan).
- Look for active archaeological digs — if you visit in summer, you might encounter working expeditions in the city or suburbs uncovering layers of Turkestan's long history.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid‑August to mid‑October — this 64‑day window combines the most pleasant temperatures (average around 22.2°C), very little rain, and abundant sunshine, ideal for walking the mausoleum grounds and visiting the bazaar.
- Late September and early October — the later part of the window offers slightly cooler days and crisp evenings, with skies staying clear and crowds thinning after the peak summer heat.
- Avoid midsummer — July and early August can bring highs near 42.2°C, making outdoor wandering uncomfortable during the middle of the day.

Planning Tips
- Arrive via Shymkent — the most common gateway. Regular, inexpensive minibuses (about 2 hours) connect Shymkent's Bekzhan or Samal bazaars to Turkestan, and you can often ask to be dropped near the mausoleum.
- Use Yandex Go or bus 15 to get around — bus 15 links the train station, Merey bus station, and the mausoleum for 100 tenge. Ride‑hailing apps also work in the city.
- Budget for cash on minibuses and buses — long‑distance minivans fill and leave when full; local buses accept cash, and some may take card or QR payment.
- Book accommodation between the mausoleum and Merey — a string of relatively smart hotels lines this corridor, with private rooms sometimes available through local contacts if you ask around.
- Plan for an alcohol‑light stay — unless you're at a major hotel bar, expect most eateries and shops to be dry. Stock up at a large supermarket if you want a drink with dinner.
