About this place
Tuguegarao is the capital of Cagayan province and the transportation hub of the Cagayan Valley. Known as the hottest city in the Philippines, it sits on a plain along the Cagayan River and serves as the regional center for government, commerce, and travel. Its name is believed to come from the Ibanag phrase tuggi gari yaw, meaning "this was cleared by fire" — a nod to the area's agricultural roots.
The city is the homeland of the Ibanag and Itawis peoples, whose languages and traditions remain visible today alongside the influence of Ilocano migration. Tuguegarao gained city status in 1999 and continues to be the main gateway to Cagayan and neighboring provinces like Kalinga and Apayao.
