About this place

Last updated Jul 18, 2026

Tsu is the capital of Mie prefecture, a city of about 290,000 people on the west coast of Ise Bay. It is often noted for having what may be the world's shortest pronounceable city name — a single syllable that sounds somewhat like a whispered 'Sue' with a soft 't' at the start.

The city stretches north to south along Route 23, making it easy to orient yourself between the main railway station and the bay. Tsu works well as a low-key base for exploring the region, with direct train connections to Nagoya, Ise, and Osaka, plus a quick ferry link to Chubu Centrair International Airport.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 18, 2026
  • Flying in — take the 40‑minute Tsu Airport Line ferry from Chubu Centrair International Airport, then a ¥200 bus or a taxi to Tsu Station.
  • Train travel from Nagoya — a basic Kintetsu ticket costs ¥980. Limited express trains stop only at Tsu station and require a supplement.
  • Using local buses — board via the centre door and take a numbered ticket. Check the fare board at the front and pay the exact amount when exiting; a change machine handles ¥1,000 notes.
  • Getting to Kyoto — take the Kintetsu line and change at Yamato‑Yagi; the Shinkansen route via Nagoya is nearly as long but costs about twice as much.
