About this place

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Toyota is the largest city in Aichi Prefecture and the sixth-largest in the Chūbu region. It lies about 30 km southeast of Nagoya. The city is synonymous with its namesake, the Toyota Motor Corporation, and its character reflects a deep connection to the automotive industry.

Toyota functions much like a company town but on a grand scale. It is a car-oriented city with an excellent road network and relatively sparse public transit compared to other Japanese cities of its size. This makes it a unique stop for travelers interested in industrial heritage or as a base for exploring the wider prefecture.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 12, 2026
  • Travel with a car where possible, as Toyota is a car-centric city with a sparse public transportation network.
  • Verify museum locations before traveling; the Toyota Automobile Museum and Industry Museum are in Nagakute and Nagoya City, not Toyota proper.
  • Use bus connections for airport access, as taking a direct bus from Centrair Airport is easier than navigating two train transfers.
