About this place
Toamasina (still widely called Tamatave) is Madagascar's main eastern port and a gateway to the coast. With a population over 500,000, the city blends working-harbour energy with relaxed seaside spots along the Bord de la mer, where restaurants and bars face the Indian Ocean. The compact centre makes it easy to explore the city hall, market streets, and nearby banks and supermarkets on foot.
