About this place
Tirupati is the spiritual heart of Andhra Pradesh, set at the foot of the forested Tirumala hills. The town serves as the gateway for one of Hinduism’s most revered pilgrimage circuits, built around the hilltop Sri Venkateswara Temple. Devotion shapes daily life here, with tens of thousands of pilgrims arriving every day. While the sacred hill shrine dominates the experience, the town also holds a quieter cultural layer through its subsidiary temples and nearby historical sites.

Things to Do
- Walk the Srivari Mettu footpath — a shorter, steeper ascent near Chandragiri that an average walker can complete in under two hours; free buses connect from Alipiri.
- Climb the Alipiri steps — the classic 3,550-step pilgrimage route with drinking water, shelters, and even a small zoo en route; luggage can be sent ahead at no cost.
- Visit Sri Varahaswami Temple first — local tradition asks pilgrims to honour Varahaswami, the hill’s original owner, before proceeding to the main Venkateswara shrine.
- Browse The Sapthagiri Magazine — a monthly religious magazine published since 1949 and available in five Indian languages at local outlets.

Things to See
- Tirumala Venkateswara Temple — perched on the seventh peak, this richly endowed Vishnu shrine is the region’s defining landmark and draws millions of devotees each year.
- Tiruchanoor (Alamelu-Mangapuram) — a nearby temple town dedicated to the goddess Padmavathi, closely linked to the Tirumala pilgrimage tradition.
- Sapthagiri (Seven Peaks) — the seven hills of Tirumala, said to symbolise the hoods of the serpent Adisesha, provide a striking natural backdrop for the temple.

Best Time to Visit
- Mid-December through early May — the dry season brings comfortable average temperatures around 26.1°C, minimal rain, and plenty of sunshine.
- Avoid peak festival periods — although the dry months are ideal, major Hindu celebrations can swell crowds dramatically; book accommodation well ahead.
- Early mornings on the hill — regardless of season, starting your climb or darshan before sunrise helps beat both heat and queues.

Planning Tips
- Book TTD rooms in advance — government-run cottages fill up fast, especially for air-conditioned options; reservations can be made online or via demand draft.
- Pack modest clothing — long skirts or loose trousers and tops that cover shoulders and the collarbone are expected; they also make temple entry more straightforward.
- Use the free luggage service — at the Alipiri footpath start you can deposit bags to be delivered uphill, saving energy for the climb.
- Lock your vehicle securely — pilgrims are advised to carry extra locks, particularly during busy periods when vehicles are left for extended hours.
