About this place
Termez sits on Uzbekistan’s southern edge, directly across the Amu Darya from Afghanistan. The modern city functions as a busy transport and trade hub, anchored by the Soviet-built Friendship Bridge, yet its soul lies in the layers of history that carpet the riverbank. Alexander the Great is traditionally credited with founding the settlement, but it was under the Kushan Empire that Old Termez truly flourished as a Silk Road crossroads, carrying Buddhist art and ideas alongside caravan goods.
The city today is modest and practical rather than picturesque. Visitors tend to come for the archaeological sites scattered north of the center, where ruined stupas and the mausoleum of the 9th-century mystic Al Hakim At-Termizi offer a tangible link to empires that swept through here long before the modern border was drawn.

Planning Tips
- Use Yandex for getting around — the ride-hailing app is cheap and reliable; most intra-city trips cost under 20,000 som.
- Exchange currency near the bazaar — unofficial money changers operate opposite the central market, a common way to change cash in the area.
- Account for rough road travel — if arriving overland from Bukhara, expect a poor-quality first half of the drive and stay alert for fast-moving trucks.
- Stock up beforehand if heading to Afghanistan — Uzbek customs ban alcohol exports, so this is the last practical place to purchase it before crossing.
