About this place
Tilburg is a lively city in the southern Netherlands that grew from a cluster of medieval villages into a major industrial centre. Once known as the wool capital of the country, it earned its residents the colourful nickname Kruikezeikers — a reminder of the days when workers brought jars of urine to the factories for treating wool. Today the city blends its industrial past with a modern, student-friendly energy, home to a respected university and a walkable, bicycle-friendly centre.
King William II left a lasting mark here, commissioning a palace and enjoying the city so much that streets, schools, and the local football club still carry his name. While mid‑20th‑century urban renewal erased many historic buildings, pockets of charm remain around the Oude Markt and Heuvelplein, where terraces, churches, and the king’s statue anchor a relaxed Brabant atmosphere.

Things to Do
- Catch live music at 013 or the Concertzaal — Tilburg punches above its weight with two solid venues: 013 for rock and pop and the Schouwburg concert hall for classical and theatrical productions.
- Visit Dierenpark de Oliemeulen — a compact zoo focused on reptiles, insects, and birds of prey, tucked away on the Reitse Hoevenstraat.
- Make a day trip to Efteling — the Benelux region’s largest theme park is practically next door and easily reached by bus from the city.
- Watch a Willem II football match — the local Eredivisie side plays at the 14,600‑capacity Koning Willem II Stadion, just a short ride south of the station.

Things to See
- Oude Markt and the Heikese church — the old market square is the natural starting point, anchored by a 19th‑century church whose tower dates to the 15th century.
- Heuvelplein and the King William II statue — a cosy square ringed by terraces, with the neo‑Gothic Heuvelse kerk and an 1852 statue of the much‑loved monarch.
- King William II’s former palace — one of the few historic buildings to survive 1960s urban renewal, built for a king who died just weeks before it was finished.

Best Time to Visit
- May to September — the most comfortable window, with long daylight hours, mild temperatures, and minimal rain; ideal for outdoor terraces and cycling.
- Late spring (May–June) — pleasant without the peak‑summer heat, and the café scene on Heuvelplein is in full swing.
- Weekends year‑round — Friday and Saturday nights bring the liveliest atmosphere, with bars open until 04:00 and late‑night food stalls running past 05:00.

Planning Tips
- Trains are your best arrival option — intercity services run twice hourly to all major neighbours and night trains operate on weekends on the busiest corridors.
- Rent or bring a bicycle — the city is small, flat, and criss‑crossed with red lanes; cycling is often quicker than driving or taking the bus.
- Try a Schrobbelèr — the local herbal liqueur (21.5% ABV) is a Tilburg tradition, especially during carnival, and available in bars and shops across the city.
- Don’t expect souvenir shopping — pack any mementos you want; Tilburg’s retail is geared toward everyday needs rather than tourist keepsakes.
- Check woollen‑heritage exhibits — while not detailed here, the city’s industrial museum‑quarter is worth scanning local listings for when you arrive.
