About this place

Thane (also known as Thana) is a city in the North Konkan region of Maharashtra, often called the "Elder Sister of Mumbai" because a portion of its district was split off to help form Mumbai. Today Thane functions largely as a suburb of Mumbai, with a population of over 1.2 million. Its biggest claim to fame is that the first railway line in India ran from Bori Bunder to Thane station.

Thane is also known as the Lake City thanks to 30 lakes within and around its boundaries. These lakes supply water to both Thane and Mumbai, and several have become tourist attractions. The city's scenic surroundings—old forts, boat rides, and resorts—make it a popular getaway for those looking to escape the bustle of Mumbai.

The area has a rich history, with evidence of settlement dating back to ancient times. It was ruled by the Portuguese (who called it Cacabe de Tana), then the Marathas, and later the British, who made it a district headquarters. Today Thane is transitioning from a manufacturing hub to a services-driven economy, with growing IT and ITES sectors.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 11, 2026
  • Getting from Mumbai airport: Take a prepaid taxi (recommended) or an auto-rickshaw to Kurla or Ghatkopar station, then board a northbound local train to Thane.
  • By car: Use the Eastern Express Highway instead of LBS Marg—it's wider, smoother, and less congested.
  • Auto-rickshaw fares: Negotiate the total fare before starting your ride to avoid meter disputes.
  • Local transport: Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) buses and auto-rickshaws are the main ways to get around; taxis are scarce but can be hired for day trips.
  • Food scene: Try local specialties like vada pav at Kunjvihar near the railway station, Malvani seafood at Hotel Vijaydurg, and Marathi snacks at Goras Upahar Gruh.
  • Booking accommodation: Book in advance as decent hotel options are limited; lodges near the station are basic.
