About this place
Tehuacán is the second-largest city in the state of Puebla, Mexico, with a population of nearly 300,000. Set in the rural scenery of the Balsas River Valley, it delivers a safe and pleasant stop for travelers interested in deep history and authentic regional life. The surrounding area is known for poultry farms and an agricultural tradition that stretches back thousands of years.
Anthropologists believe the Tehuacán Valley may be the birthplace of Mesoamerican agriculture, with evidence suggesting corn was first domesticated here close to 9,000 years ago. The valley is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and recently discovered cave paintings dating back at least 10,000 years underscore its role as a cradle of early civilization in the Americas.
