About this place
Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, sprawls along the banks of the Mtkvari River in the foothills of the Trialeti mountain range. Legend says the city was founded in the 5th century by a king whose hunting pheasant fell into a warm spring — the name comes from the Georgian word tbili, meaning "warm." Despite being destroyed and rebuilt 29 times, the Old Town retains its original layout of narrow, crooked streets and houses built around courtyards.
With a metropolitan population of roughly 1.3 million, Tbilisi balances ancient architecture with a modern, evolving cityscape. Museums, sulphur baths, ancient churches, and a dynamic food-and-wine scene reward travelers who explore beyond the postcard views.
