About this place
Taza is a historic city in northern Morocco that divides neatly into two parts: the hilltop Medina (Taza-Haut), home to centuries-old mosques, a 14th‑century madrasa, and medieval fortifications, and the modern Ville Nouvelle (Taza-Bas) in the valley below. Its strategic position between the Rif Mountains and the Middle Atlas has made it a crossroads for travellers since prehistoric times.
The Medina’s walls and gates reward walkers with sweeping views over olive groves and surrounding valleys. In the Ville Nouvelle, daily life unfolds around Place de l’Indépendance, where cafés, shops, and local internet spots give the city a relaxed, low‑key energy. For independent travellers, Taza works well as a quiet stopover between Fez and Oujda that offers history without heavy crowds.

Things to See
- Medina walls promenade — Walk the medieval ramparts built by the Almohades and later dynasties for views across the Rif, Middle Atlas, and olive‑filled valleys.
- Tour Es‑Sarragine — Visit the crumbling Saracen tower on the western side of the Medina; its square‑to‑round design and adjacent Almohade‑era fortifications make a striking photo stop.
- Bab Er Rih and other gates — Pass through the ‘Gate of the Winds’ above the Medina to catch breezes and panoramas of the city and mountains; additional gates such as Bab Jemaa offer quiet viewpoints.
- 14th‑century madrasa — Discover the historic Quranic school inside the Medina, representing Taza’s long‑standing role as a centre of learning.
- Local construction in Ville Nouvelle — In the newer streets of Taza‑Bas, keep an eye out for houses still under construction for an informal look at Moroccan building techniques.

Best Time to Visit
- April to June — Spring warmth averages 21.9°C with very little rain and abundant sunshine, making the medina promenades and gate views especially pleasant.
- Late August to October — Early autumn brings similar comfort around 22°C and minimal precipitation; the afternoon breeze at Bab Er Rih adds a refreshing touch.
- Winter shoulder — While colder and wetter, the city is less visited and the Medina walls take on a moody beauty—just pack waterproof layers.

Planning Tips
- Arriving by train — ONCF trains serve Taza’s station in the Ville Nouvelle, linking it comfortably with Fez and Oujda.
- Grands taxis — Shared taxis near the train station provide faster and cheaper regional travel than buses or trains, though seatbelts are rare.
- Laundry and weather — Outside summer, rain is common; the affordable pressing services on Avenue Mohammed V can freshen up muddy walking gear overnight.
- Women travellers — Cafés in the Ville Nouvelle are mostly male‑oriented, but a few spots welcome women, and the early‑evening hours see a more mixed crowd.
