About this place

Tartus is an ancient Mediterranean port city and a favored summer retreat for Syrians, having been largely spared by the civil war. Its history stretches back to a 2nd‑millennium BC Phoenician settlement known as Antaradus, later becoming a Crusader stronghold and an important Ottoman-era commercial hub.

Today the city remains Syria’s second‑largest port and hosts a Russian naval facility. A string of beach hotels and resorts lines the coast, while just offshore lies Arwad, the country’s only inhabited island, settled for at least four millennia.
