About this place
Tarija is the relaxed capital of Bolivia's premier wine region, set in a gentle central valley at 1,800–2,000 meters. The mild, semi-arid climate is a welcome contrast to the harsh Altiplano and the sticky Amazon lowlands, with warm days and cool nights defining the rhythm of life. Founded by the Spanish in 1574 in a valley once touched by the Inca Empire, the city today centers on a picturesque main plaza filled with restaurants, craft shops, and a laid-back pace that invites wandering on foot.
As the heart of Bolivia's emerging wine country, Tarija offers a distinctive blend of colonial history, local viticulture, and easy access to surrounding villages and vineyards. The compact downtown is highly walkable, while inexpensive micros, trufis, and taxis connect visitors to nearby destinations like San Lorenzo and El Valle de la Concepción.

Planning Tips
- Arriving by bus — Direct connections are available from major cities, including La Paz (roughly 18 hours) and Santa Cruz (about 14 hours). Buses from the Argentine border town of Bermejo also serve Tarija.
- Immigration from Argentina — If crossing from Aguas Blancas by ferry, confirm you receive a Bolivian entry stamp at the border; if not, arrange for a taxi or instruct your colectivo driver to stop at the immigration office near the bridge before continuing.
- Getting around town — For trips within the city center, hop-on micros are plentiful and cost a few bolivianos. Short taxi rides are also very affordable. Shared trufis and colectivos to nearby valleys depart from specific street-side stands.
- Internet connectivity — Several internet cafes and call centers are scattered around the city, especially near the main plaza, though connection speeds are often more like dial-up than broadband.
