About this place
Taraz is a historic near-border city in the Kazakh Desert, situated between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Once a vital hub on the Silk Road, its story stretches back over two millennia to conflicts between Han and Xiongnu forces. Renamed Zhambyl during the Soviet era, the city reclaimed its original name after Kazakhstan gained independence.
Today, Taraz serves as a regional center where travelers can glimpse monumental Kazakh urban architecture and experience a friendly, local atmosphere. It offers a genuine slice of southern Kazakhstan, away from the more frequented tourist corridors.
