About this place
Tarakan is a city on an island of the same name in East Kalimantan, and the largest city in the province of North Kalimantan. With a population around 220,000, it functions as a key transit point rather than the provincial capital — that distinction belongs to Tanjung Selor.
Border crossing — Tarakan serves as a visa-free entry point between Indonesia and Malaysia, with ferry connections to Tawau in Sabah making it a practical gateway for overland travelers moving between the two countries.
