About this place
Tambov is a mid-sized city in the Chernozemye region and the capital of Tambov Oblast, roughly 450 km from Moscow. Founded in 1636 as a southern fort, it evolved into a provincial center and a major agricultural hub. The city is well-known for its long association with wolves — historically, the term 'wolf' was slang for a season worker from Tambov, and today this heritage appears in local souvenirs, vodka, and even a dedicated museum.
The compact city center retains a variety of historical architecture, including Classical and Art-Nouveau buildings. While not a mainstream tourist destination, Tambov offers a quiet, authentic slice of Russian provincial life with a scenic river promenade and several unusual museums.
