About this place

Last updated Jun 14, 2026

Takeo, the provincial seat of Takeo Province, is a small city in Cambodia's southern lowlands, not far from the capital Phnom Penh. Known as the heart of Cambodia's silk weaving industry, it offers a glimpse into traditional craftsmanship set against a backdrop of sprawling rice paddies. The region is warm year-round, with a pace of life that feels far removed from the bustle of larger cities.

While the urban center itself is fairly modest, Takeo serves as a convenient base for exploring several noteworthy ancient sites scattered across the countryside. Phnom Da and the surrounding Angkorian-era attractions are the main draw for visitors passing through.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 14, 2026
  • Arrange your own wheels — hiring a car or motorbike for the day is the best way to reach the remote temple sites and weaving villages.
  • Plan it as a day trip from Phnom Penh or a stopover rather than a long-stay destination, as accommodations are limited outside of a casino resort near the Vietnam border.
  • Stay hydrated and protected — the tropical heat and humidity, combined with rural sun exposure, warrant plenty of water and sunblock.
