About this place

Last updated Jun 12, 2026

Taizhou (泰州) is a prefecture-level city in central Jiangsu Province, straddling the northern bank of the Yangtze River. With a history stretching back over two millennia to the Qin Dynasty, it evolved from an early administrative center into a significant hub for trade, silk, and maritime commerce during the Ming and Qing eras. Today, the city merges its deep historical and cultural identity—renowned for local opera and scholarly traditions—with modern industrial and commercial growth.

The urban heart is Hailing District, which most residents mean when they say "Taizhou," flanked by Gaogang and Jiangyan districts. Farther afield, satellite cities like Jingjiang, Taixing, and Xinghua each maintain distinct local characters. For leisure travelers, Taizhou offers a blend of historic temples, parks, lively temple fairs, and waterfront scenery along the ancient Grand Canal.

Things to Do

Last updated Jun 12, 2026
  • Attend a temple fair during the Spring Festival or Lantern Festival: Join locals at the Taizhou Temple Fair (泰州庙会) to watch dragon and lion dances, yangko performances, and stilt walking amid a vibrant, festive atmosphere.
  • Visit the Taizhou Peony Festival in spring: Take in colorful peony gardens across the city during the Taizhou Peony Festival (泰州牡丹节), which also features folk performances, handicraft exhibitions, and regional delicacies.

  • Late April to mid-June: Warm and comfortably sunny, with average temperatures around 21°C. This window coincides with the spring bloom, making the Taizhou Peony Festival a highlight.
  • Late August to early November: Pleasant autumn weather with lows occasionally dipping to 0.4°C but daytime highs still warm. Lower rainfall and cloud cover make sightseeing easy, and the Grand Canal Festival may fall within this span.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 12, 2026
  • Getting there: Taizhou Railway Station lies 12 km northeast of the city center. Bus 26 (¥2, about 30 minutes) connects to downtown; a taxi costs roughly ¥30. Services run on the Nanjing-Nantong line with regular connections to Nanjing and Nantong, and a few K-trains onward to Shanghai.
  • Getting around: Local buses mostly cost ¥1 and require exact change. Taxis are plentiful and start at ¥8. Renting a bicycle can be fast and fun but lock it securely and watch for encroaching vehicles in bike lanes.
  • Eat like a local: Try the Three Delicacies of Taizhou (stinky tofu from Taixing, ginger duck, and crab roe soup dumplings), crystal steamed buns, or river fresh hui noodles. Head to Pozi Street for cheap eats or explore family-run spots scattered around Hailing.
  • Language prep: Public transport and ticket offices operate almost entirely in Chinese. Learning a few basic phrases or carrying a translation app will smooth your experience significantly.
  • Pack for the season: Summer is hot and rainy, so bring light layers and rain gear. Winter is drier and mild but can be cool; a warm jacket is advisable. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring on foot or bike.
  • Shopping base: Focus your shopping in Hailing District, roughly between Dongjin Road and Jichuan Road, with Qingnian Road forming the western boundary.
