About this place
Taiyuan (太原 Tàiyuán) is the capital of Shanxi Province and serves as an important central hub in the region. Situated next to the Fenhe River and surrounded by mountains, the city boasts a history spanning over 2,500 years. Today, Taiyuan is known for its heavy industry and mining, but it also offers travelers a handful of notable sights that can be explored within half a day, including the Shanxi Museum, the carvings at Chongshan Temple, and the Twin Pagodas.
For leisure travelers, Taiyuan often functions as a convenient stopover between Wutaishan (Mount Wutai) and the ancient walled city of Pingyao. The city provides practical connections by bus and train to these popular destinations, making it a practical base for exploring northern Shanxi's cultural and natural highlights.
