About this place

Last updated Jun 10, 2026

If you want to feel the real heartbeat of Taipei, far removed from the skyscrapers and shopping malls of East Taipei, West Taipei's Datong and Wanhua districts are the places to explore. Old Taipei, nestled along the Danshui River, is one of the city's oldest inhabited areas and was its commercial hub until the 1990s. While much of the original architecture has been lost, neighborhoods like Dadaocheng and Dalongdong retain a traditional feel, with historic temples, renovated shophouses, and a vibrant street life.

Today, this area offers a fascinating blend of old and new. Dihua Street has undergone extensive renovation, now mixing traditional Chinese medicine shops and dry goods stores with modern cafes, handicraft boutiques, and distinctive tea houses. Nearby, Ximending has been transformed into a major youth hub for shopping and dining, often compared to Tokyo's Harajuku. Landmarks like Longshan Temple remain deeply significant, where locals still consult fortune tellers for guidance on life decisions.
