Taichung is a vibrant city in west-central Taiwan, home to over 2.8 million people and known for its pleasant climate and rapidly growing cultural scene. As the second-largest city on the island, it blends urban energy with nearby natural escapes, offering visitors a mix of world-class museums, lively night markets, and scenic hills just a short drive away.

The city's history reflects layers of indigenous heritage, Qing Dynasty development, Japanese colonial planning, and modern growth. Taichung is also a hub for food lovers, with its famous bakeries turning out sun cakes and pineapple tarts, and night markets buzzing with energy well into the evening.

Taichung's downtown area is compact and walkable, while its bus and metro systems make it easy to explore further afield. Whether you're looking to relax in a park, shop at a bustling market, or hike in the surrounding hills, Taichung offers a welcoming base for exploring central Taiwan.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Getting around: Buses are the most convenient and affordable option within the city. YouBike bicycles are also available and free for the first 30 minutes with a registered Easycard.
  • Airport access: Taichung International Airport is best reached by bus, car, or taxi — there is no metro or HSR connection.
  • HSR station: The Taichung HSR station is in Wuri District; a free shuttle bus connects to downtown and universities.
  • Night market strategy: Fengjia Night Market can be extremely crowded on Fridays and weekends — plan accordingly for a more relaxed visit.
  • Accommodation: Most lodging is in the downtown area; mountain and coastal areas are far from the city center unless you're planning to stay in those regions.
  • Safety: Look both ways before crossing roads, and when alighting from a bus, check for scooters on your right side.
  • Language: Many signs and bus announcements are in both Chinese and English, making navigation manageable for non-Chinese speakers.
