About this place
Szeged is Hungary's sunny southern hub, straddling the Tisza River near the Serbian border. Known as the "City of Sunshine" for its abundant bright days, it blends a relaxed riverside atmosphere with elegant architecture. The city was largely rebuilt after a devastating flood in 1879, giving its center a cohesive, planned feel with wide avenues, ring roads, and striking Art Nouveau and historicist palaces.
It is a major cultural and university town, famous for its Open Air Theatre Festival each summer and a renowned gastronomic scene anchored by the iconic fisherman's soup (Halászlé). With a population around 170,000, Szeged feels lively but walkable, and the Tisza River provides a scenic backdrop for water sports and cycling.
