About this place
Suzhou (苏州; Sou-tseu in Wu, Sūzhōu in Mandarin, old romanization "Soochow") is a major city in Jiangsu province, China, famed for its beautiful classical gardens and traditional waterside architecture. A group of its finest gardens forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is crisscrossed with canals, earning it the nickname "Venice of the East" from Marco Polo.
For centuries, Suzhou was a center of the silk trade and a haven for scholars, artists, and skilled craftsmen. Today, it is a bustling modern city and a global hub for high-tech manufacturing, particularly in the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP). This blend of ancient heritage — tranquil gardens, old neighborhoods, and canal-side architecture — with cutting-edge industry creates a destination of stark and fascinating contrasts.
Visitors can explore classical gardens dating back to the 11th century, marvel at the Suzhou Museum designed by I.M. Pei, and wander the atmospheric streets of the old city center. At the same time, they'll encounter the immense prosperity of one of China's fastest-growing regions, with world-class dining, shopping, and a large expatriate community.

Planning Tips
- The Suzhou Metro (lines 1, 2, and 4) is the most efficient way to get around; fares start at ¥2. Taxis are affordable but drivers rarely speak English – always carry your destination written in Chinese.
- When buying train tickets, foreigners must show their passport at the station counter; self-service machines require a Chinese ID. Book a few days in advance for faster trains, especially around holidays.
- Learn a few basic Mandarin phrases, as English is not widely spoken outside of major hotels and expat bars. Knowing how to write addresses in Chinese is essential.
- For a unique day trip, consider cycling from Shanghai to Suzhou via the flat, bike-friendly S343 Provincial Highway (about 70 km / 2-3 hours).
- The Classical Gardens of Suzhou are a UNESCO World Heritage Site; visiting at least one of the four great gardens (Humble Administrator, Lingering, Great Wave, Lion Grove) is highly recommended.
- If you wish to buy silk embroidery, freshwater pearls, or sandalwood fans, Suzhou offers excellent selection. Bargaining is expected, and fine hand-embroidery is not cheap but is exceptionally high quality.
- Suzhou does not have its own civilian airport. The closest major airports are in Shanghai (Pudong and Hongqiao) and Wuxi. High-speed trains from Shanghai Hongqiao Station take under 30 minutes.
