About this place
Surat is a bustling commercial city in South Gujarat, India, sitting on the banks of the Tapi River. It is a major global gemstone center — over 92% of the world's diamonds are cut here — and has a long history as a significant port in medieval and early British colonial times, prior to the rise of Mumbai. Today it's the second-largest city in Gujarat, with a population of nearly seven million (2025).
The city is also famous for its textile industry, producing high-quality fabrics and garments at competitive prices. While largely off the beaten path for foreign tourists, Surat offers a slice of authentic Western Indian life with a lively food scene, excellent shopping, and a safe, welcoming atmosphere. Locals are friendly and curious, though English is not widely spoken outside of hotels, so learning a few phrases in Gujarati or Hindi can be helpful.
