About this place

East Java (Jawa Timur) covers the eastern third of the island of Java, Indonesia, along with the island of Madura and several smaller offshore islands. Its spine is dominated by a series of rugged, spectacular volcanic peaks, most famously in the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park, where the active Mount Bromo and the towering Mount Semeru (Java's highest peak at 3,676 meters) create one of Indonesia's most iconic landscapes. This volcanic activity has produced fertile lands and verdant agriculture, while both the north and south coasts feature beautiful, deep, fine-sand beaches.

Beyond the volcanic drama, the region offers remote wilderness experiences in the southern parks of Alas Purwo and Meru Betiri, and the savannah-like Baluran National Park in the northeast. The cultural heart beats in cities like Malang, a clean, historic city with a cool climate and strong Dutch colonial character, and Surabaya, the bustling capital and Indonesia's second-largest city. The less-visited island of Madura and the spectacular Ijen Plateau near Banyuwangi round out a destination that balances natural wonders with rich heritage, making it a compelling stop for adventurous travelers exploring Java.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jun 10, 2026
  • Fly into Malang's Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport if your destination is Malang or Bromo — it's much closer and avoids the heavy traffic from Surabaya.
  • For the Bromo sunrise experience, book a 4x4 vehicle and lodge stay in advance, especially during peak tourist season.
  • The Ijen Crater midnight blue-fire tour requires a mask that filters sulfur dioxide — arrange this with a guide beforehand.
  • Temperatures in the high parts of Bromo-Tengger-Semeru can drop near 0°C at night; pack warm layers and a windproof jacket.
  • English is understood at large city hotels and major tourist sites, but learning a few Indonesian phrases will go a long way.
  • Consider renting a car with a driver rather than driving yourself — road conditions and traffic can be challenging for newcomers.
  • Book train tickets in "Executive" class for the most comfortable intercity travel.
