About this place
Sukkur, the third largest city in Sindh, sits on the west bank of the Indus River in Pakistan. Its historical name, Saqar, means intense, a nod to the extreme desert climate. Fittingly, the city is nicknamed Darya Dino — gift of the river — as the Indus provides a vital lifeline in an otherwise arid landscape.
This ancient strategic center has roots stretching back to Alexander the Great's invasion in 326 BCE, when the nearby settlement of Alor served as a regional capital. Today, Sukkur is best known for the colossal Lloyd Barrage, a British-era engineering marvel that transformed the region's socio-economic prospects and remains a defining landmark.
