About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital and a city that charms visitors with its tranquil pace and well-preserved historic center. Often called la ciudad blanca for its whitewashed neo-classical buildings, the UNESCO-listed core is compact and highly walkable, centered around Plaza 25 de Mayo. The city's agreeable climate and welcoming atmosphere often lead travelers to stay much longer than planned.

Historically, Sucre grew as an elegant retreat for wealth connected to the silver mines of nearby Potosí. Today, it remains an important educational and religious center, home to the second-oldest university in the Americas. While most government functions moved to La Paz long ago, Sucre retains a refined, peaceful identity focused on culture, history, and the beautiful surrounding countryside.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Bus travel — Overnight buses connect Sucre to most major cities. Roads are often rough; upgrading to a semi-cama or full cama seat is advisable for comfort on long journeys.
  • Daytime alternatives — To avoid night buses, use a chain of shared taxis or trufis (colectivo vans) between intermediate towns. Start early if traveling in one day.
  • Cash and bargaining — Bus tickets are often sold on the departure day; showing up a few hours early can yield considerable discounts. Verify whether advance bookings from agencies are valid for the actual bus line.
  • Getting around town — Taxis within the center should cost no more than Bs. 5 per person. Micros (small buses) run set routes for a small fare paid directly to the driver.
  • Connectivity — 4G coverage is available from major operators. Reliable Wi-Fi can be found at several cafes and hotels, while the central plaza offers free but slow service.
