About this place
St Helens is a former industrial powerhouse in Merseyside, about 14 miles northeast of Liverpool. Historically part of Lancashire, the town grew rapidly from the 18th century on the back of coal mining and glass-making. Those industries shaped its identity, and the story of plate glass — particularly Pilkington’s revolutionary float-glass process developed here — remains a fascinating part of the town’s heritage.
Today, St Helens is transitioning from its heavy industrial past into a town with surprising green spaces, country parks, and family-friendly attractions. It serves as a practical base for exploring the wider Liverpool and Manchester areas while offering a quieter, more local slice of English life.
