About this place

Last updated Jul 19, 2026

Spokane anchors the Inland Northwest as the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis. Pronounced "spo-CAN," it serves as the economic and cultural hub for roughly 1.5 million people across eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle, with an immediate metro population of about 680,000. The city sits on the north edge of the Palouse wheat country, where rolling hills meet the Spokane River valley.

Downtown Spokane is the center for shopping, main attractions, and hotels, with a skywalk system connecting much of the core — particularly welcome during winter. The city itself is home to just over 200,000 residents, and the destination also includes suburbs like Liberty Lake and Spokane Valley.

  • Golfing — choose from 33 courses within a short drive of the city center, including four public courses run by the city and six by the county. The Coeur d'Alene resort course features a green that floats on the lake.

Planning Tips

Last updated Jul 19, 2026
  • Navigating by car — I-90 is the best east-west route across town. For car rentals, return at the airport is well before the terminal; watch for the left turn at Flint Road a full mile out.
  • Getting from the airport — STA bus #60 costs $2.00 one way (25 minutes to downtown). Taxis run roughly $25 plus tip.
  • Transit passes — STA offers 2-hour and all-day passes. Request your pass from the driver before putting your fare in the box.
  • Avoid event weekends unless participating — steer clear of the first Sunday in May (Bloomsday) and the last weekend in June (Hoopfest) if you aren't attending; traffic and lodging are scarce.
