About this place
Sorocaba is a thriving industrial city in the interior of São Paulo state, about 90 km from the capital. Though often overlooked as a tourist destination, it offers a well-preserved downtown, a notably strong economy, and a distinct claim to fame: it may be the most cycling-friendly large city in Brazil, with over 106 km of cycleways. The city is also remarkably free of the extreme social contrasts common elsewhere in the country, with practically no slums (favelas) and a reputation for safety.
Founded in 1654, Sorocaba is pleasant for a more everyday Brazilian experience—where modern infrastructure meets a charming historic core, without the typical urban sprawl pressures.
